Vegetables, Wildflowers, and Willow Canes! St Francis of Assisi School’s Planting Palooza at the Kelly Park Community Garden.

The May 22 -26 2022 week began with several community garden volunteers and Association members pruning the willow canes surrounding the community garden at Kelly Park and preparing plots in anticipation of the three-day event with students from all classes at St Francis of Assisi School in Outer Cove. A 10 m x 1-meter trench was dug to plant willow canes and the ground outside the northern fence was cleared for planting the wildflowers (thanks to Bill Dyer for the donation of his time & excavator).  Then the fun began!  SFOA Kindergarten and Grade 6 students arrived together on Tuesday and shared a wonderful experience, with the 6th Graders planting a legacy willow fence facing the back of the playground, and then helping the kindergarten students plot the wildflowers - see seed planting video here https://twitter.com/i/status/1529103828037017602 .This is the 6th Graders' last year at the SFOA K-6 school. The Grade 1 and 2 classes planted pumpkins and runner beans, and the remaining classes planted 7 plots of potatoes, with the fall harvest destined for the Northeast Avalon food bank! The SFOA-LBMCOCDA outdoor classroom program at the community garden ensures our students learn about food security, organic gardening, and soil enhancement, while also giving back to the local community by helping to grow food to share with others. Big thanks to the staff at SFOA and the support of principal Allison North.  A huge shout-out to our Association board members, John Kennedy, and Sally Goddard, and volunteers Rita Kennedy, Karen Youden Walsh, and MHA for Cape St. Francis, Joedy Wall, - a greater supporter of our community garden- for their commitment throughout the whole 3 days of planting. Special thanks to all SFOA students who made this a special day!! Best of luck to all Grade sixers attending junior high school in the fall - we will miss you!
