To beautify the Outer Cove bridge, our Association teamed up with the Town from 2017 to 2019. The first step was to contract Hanlon’s Services Ltd to remove the graffiti from all bridge walls. Then, local artist, Sarah O’Rourke Whelan was contracted to paint a mural on the northside wall of the archway that symbolizes a moment in the Town’s history. Funding was provided by the town for both murals.
Sarah’s mural immortalizes the start of the April 1980 Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research. Before the run began Terry visited Outer Cove beach to fill a glass bottle with Atlantic water to pour into the Pacific at the end of his run, symbolically connecting the country.
We know that our Town was settled primarily for fishing and farming in the early-1800s and “the earliest record of settlement in Logy Bay is from 1818 when Luke Ryan, a fisherman, sought permission to build a fishing room” (source: Wikipedia). Much of the fishing and farming culture has faded away over the years. The second mural by Sarah was started in 2020 and completed in 2021. It depicts the bustling scene of fishers mending their nets at their rooms on Outer Cove Beach. Our cover picture is a sketch provided by Sarah.
"More than just paint on a wall these murals are community showpieces that authenticate the existence of our Town’s history and culture.” Sarah O’Rourke Whelan - pictured below.
