Time to plant your potatoes. All grades visited the KP Community Garden during Thursday and Friday of this past week to prepare their raised beds and plant their potatoes for the fall harvest. The kindergarten class also planted wildflowerseeds for the bees and butterflies. Wonderful to see such great enthusiasm! The students learned about using compost, kelp tea, organic fertilizers, and how to find the ‘eyes’ of the potatoes and which side to plant upward. All potatoes harvested by the students will be donated to NEA Food Bank in the fall. This is part of the Logy Bay Development Association’s partnership with SFOA school’s outdoor classroom activities where students learn about organic farming techniques and food sustainability. Special thanks, to garden volunteers Rita Kennedy, MHA Joedy Wall, Randene Michelin Lambe, Karen Youden Walsh, and LBDA members Sally Goddard, John Kennedy, and Steve Walsh. Many thanks to SFOA School principal, Trina Pearce, and her great teaching staff! Funding grants for the extension of the community garden willow fence and beds, fertilizer, and garden tools were provided by Wellness Coalition of Avalon East and the Town of LBMCOC. Funding grants for the new well pump were provided by ActiveNL and the Town of LBMCOC.
A Big Shout out to Peter Byrne at “The Seed Company” on Harbour Drive in St. John’s for donating 22 kg ( 50lb) sack of potato seed for the students to plant. #theseedcompany.ca
