Yesterday was a momentous day for our Town! After four years in the planning stage, with disruptions by the pandemic and cost overruns due to the worldwide crisis in supplies and fuels, Peter’s Path Trail was reopened Thursday, June 8, 2023. Our Association, with funding from the Town, GovNL, and many corporate and private sponsor donations, rebuilt the trail to make it accessible to all residents.
During a large gathering of families, friends, LBDA members, and special guests at the southwestern corner of Kelly Park entrance to Peter’s Path, Mrs. Catherine Hickey, wife of the late Peter Hickey, and her daughters, Paula, Denise and Karen, with Mayor Denis Hickey and MHA Joedy Wall cut the ribbon. The path was a right of way dating back to the mid-1980s connecting Lower Road to Outer Cove Road. Peter’s Path got its name from resident Peter Hickey who would cut out the overgrown right-of-way to allow the neighbourhood children to access the newly constructed Kelly Park in 1976. Later a provincial government grant was used to upgrade the trail in the late 1970’s and the last upgrades took place in the late 1990’s. The new trail has fixed several major drainage issues with the addition of new culverts and many tons of stone. These upgrades, along with a compacted surface material, now makes the trail accessible to those who have mobility issues, including those with wheelchairs.
Special thanks to all the partners, sponsors, and the many residents who were on hand for the reopening. Thanks to the Town Manager, Susan Arns, and her staff and the many other residents who supported our Association during this project. A big shout out to our Planning and Development Committee co-leaders, John Kennedy and John Doyle, for a job well done.
