On Monday June 17, grade 6 St. Francis of Assisi students, along with their teachers Mrs. Dyer and Mrs. Pelley, closed out the school year by gathering at the O’Brien Family War Memorial Grotto in the church yard next door to plant the forget-me-knot seedlings that they had set in their classroom earlier in the season. Under the guidance of our auxiliary volunteers, Karen Youden Walsh and Rita Kennedy the young graduates were schooled on all things about the horticultural of the forget-me-nots. Committee member John Kennedy, talked to the group about the history and significance of the symbolic blue flower. Karen, Rita and John, assisted by MHA for cape St. Francis Joedy Wall, put the excited students to work, planting, watering and covering the young seedlings. The students were then treated to a surprise pizza lunch.

Thanks to The Newfoundland Gaze Seed Company by E. W. Gaze for donating the supplies for this legacy project.

Invited special guest Comrade Pat O’Rourke was also in attendance and shared some of his experiences with the students. Joedy Wall presented Comrade O’Rourke with a commemorative pin in recognition of the repatriation of the unknown soldier on the Centennial anniversary of the Newfoundland National War Memorial

Please join your fellow residents at our Veterans Memorial at 2pm for the July 1st Memorial Day Ceremony to honour all veterans who have served in the many wartime and peacekeeping operations so that we may enjoy the freedom we have today. Follow us on Facebook
